The Carnegie Deli is one of the most famous Deli’s in New York City. It is located in midtown Manhattan on the corner of 7th avenue. It rests right beside Carnegie Hall, the popular auditorium and concert venue that has a history of displaying some of the most famous performers in the music industry. The Carnegie Deli was opened in 1937, it has remained one of the most frequented culinary establishments in the city since its inception. It is quite literally the most famous delicatessen in all of the United States. Many famous characters have enjoyed eats here after performing at Carnegie Hall.
The restaurant offers an array of wonderful made to order sandwiches which include the legendary hot open face pastrami, and corned beef sandwiches that incorporate at least a pound of meat. That’s a lot of food! Other delicacies include the traditional Jewish deli items; Matzoh ball soup, excellent latkes (potato pancakes), chopped liver, and smoked salmon. In addition to the traditional Jewish dishes, The Carnegie Deli also serves non-kosher dishes such as ham, sausage and bacon. Their cheesecake is to die for (and over a pound per serving!) But beware, you will be charged a “share” fee if you cannot finish this much food on your own. Usually they charge $3.00 extra for an extra plate. Meals are conveniently and affordably priced around $15 per person. One thing to note is that the restaurant only accepts cash, so plastic doesn’t work here! It is straight back-to-basics traditional delicatessen over here! The restaurant has a unique motto: “If you cant finish your meal, we’ve done something wrong!”
Just sitting in the deli, you can appreciate the immense history that the Carnegie Deli has procured. Hanging from its walls you can see a number of different autographed pictures of the famous individuals who have dined at the establishment. Such respected names as Henny Youngman, Woody Allen, and Adam Sandler as well as many other greats. The restaurant is open from 6:30am to 4am every day, so your never too late to enjoy one of New York City’s most famous meals.
