Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

One of the most well known museums in all of the United States of America is the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. Affectionately referred to as “The Guggenheim”, it houses many different styles of art which include Contemporary, Modern, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist styles from many different artists.

In addition to its permanent exhibits the Guggenheim also hosts a variety of revolving guest exhibits throughout the course of the year. There is no collection of influential artwork that is more completely awe inspiring as the different works of art housed under The Guggenheim’s roof. The Museum itself was designed by the notable architect, Frank Lloyd Wright and has been honored as being one of the most important architectural landmarks of the 20th century. It was one of Frank Lloyd Wrights final major works of art. The building is beautifully designed and is said to be the perfect outward manifestation of the inner collections the Guggenheim hides inside of its walls.

The Guggenheim opened its doors on October 21st, 1959. It was the second Museum that was opened by the Guggenheim Foundation which was named after its creator, the Philanthropist Solomon R. Guggenheim. The foundation has opened many museums both in and outside the United States. Solomon R. Guggenheim had a love of art and decided to put together a collection of works from abstract painters starting in 1929 by the advice of his art advisor, a Mrs. Hilla Rebay. His collection initially began in his apartment but soon outgrew its humble home and a larger space was deemed necessary. Solomon devoted his life to promoting and encouraging art education as well as enlightening the public about the importance of art in their lives. Guggenheim continued to add to his collection, which necessitated larger and larger buildings to house its vast size as the years went on.

The Guggenheim recently underwent a restoration which was completed during the summer of 2008 in which the entire exterior of the building received a face-lift. Many repairs were made and the foundations as well as walls were reinforced. Old paint was stripped off and cracks due to the seasonal fluctuations in temperatures in New York City were repaired. The Guggenheim museum is a wonderful place to spend a day marveling at wondrous works of art from many influential artists. If you visit New York City, be sure to stop by the Guggenheim and check out all of their interesting exhibits.
