New York Museums

New york City Entertainment News

New York is a city that is known for their large selection of different museums that cover a wide range of topics, making New York a mainstay for history buffs and curious tourists alike. Some of the world’s most famous works of art and artifacts are located within the museums that the city has to offer.

Perhaps the most popular museum in New York City is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, also known at the MET. One of the museums most popular attractions is the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, which allows visitors to the museum to see an illustrated and comprehensive look back at art through the ages. Many of the works of art that are contained in the Timeline are actually located at the MET. Inside of the museum, a number of different departments separate cultures and periods of time in order to make it easier to find what you are looking for. For instance, one section highlights Americans paintings and sculptures, while another is dedicated solely to Greek and Roman art. The MET was first founded in 1870 and is located inside of Central Park along 5th avenue, making it a short walking distance from many of the hotels located in Manhattan.

The Museum of Modern Art, or as it is better known, MoMA, is a museum that focuses generally on art from the last 200 years of history. Their museum is not limited to conventional art, and also contains a number of original models of inventions that went on to change the way that we operate as a society. The Museum of Modern Art contains departments based around architecture and design, drawings and even photography and film. While most museums focus as deep into the past as they possibly can, MoMA takes a look at the great things that our society has accomplished over the course of the last one to two hundred years.

The Guggenheim Museum also focuses on modern art to some extent, but also congregates International works of art from around the world. The museum is known for consistently changing their exhibitions and constantly updating their collections with new modern art from around the world. All of the art contained within the museum was either purchased, or was gifted to the museum by collectors including Karl Nierendorf, Katherine S. Dreier and Robert Mapplethorpe. The Guggenheim Museum has one of the most comprehensive collections of modern art in the world.

Another popular museum, the Intrepid Museum, operates with a focus on sea, air and space. It is home to one of the largest collections of antique planes in the world, and accurately documents human progression through aerial technology. The museum is also known for allowing guests to take a tour of the famous Concorde Submarine, which was added to the museum in 1989.

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in New York is also on the stop-lists of many sightseers. The wax museum contains wax figures of many of the most popular celebrities in the world from both the past and present.

New York is home to some of the most comprehensive museums in the world. While it might be hard to make room to see them all, it certainly is possible to choose a few that pique your interest and take a look at their elaborate collections.
