So you are a tourist exploring the wonderful Big Apple and you want to learn a little bit more about the history of this Great city. There are so many different aspects to consider and if you were to try and visit each landmark and influential point in history, you could quite literally spend weeks or even months exploring what the city has to offer.
A much more efficient way to view the history of New York City is by visiting the Museum of the City of New York. Its exhibits consist of different artifacts, information and artwork that give you a birds-eye view of the entire history of New York City from around 1923 to the present day.
This is a wonderful destination to bring the family, and it won’t eat up your entire budget either! Tickets are $10 for adults, discounts are offered for children less than 10 years of age. The Museum of the City of New York operates as a non-profit organization and receives government funding to help spread knowledge about the history of New York City. Its unique exhibits include drawings, prints and paintings as well as numerous photographs that feature notable aspects from different locations around the city and the citizens who occupy it. The museum also exhibits antique furniture, books and decorative objects as well as unique costumes that were once used by Broadway stars. You can also find different collections for the various service organizations in the city such as the police and fire brigades as well as military and marine warfare.
The Museum of the City of New York is definitely an attraction you may want to spend some time to sift through, and even though it is a nice place to take children it may not be such a good idea if you will be traveling with younger children under the age of 8 or 9. Many of the exhibits are catered towards a more adult audience and smaller children may not be able to comprehend the depth and significance of many of the artifacts. Currently the Museum is hosting an exhibit on the Notorious and Notable women of the 20th century as well as an exhibit entitled “America’s Mayor” which details many pictures of John V. Lindsay.
There is also an excellent exhibit called “Timescapes” which is basically a multimedia representation of the history of New York City. This is a must see exhibit for any tourist or visitor who wants to learn about the history of New York. You can reach the museum at 212-534-1672 to ask any questions or to find out what exhibits are currently being shown. Be sure to eat before you venture into this museum because it is easy to lose track of time and you don’t want to have to leave the museum to refuel before seeing everything it has to offer.
