One such establishment is Macy’s Department store.
Macy’s was born in 1858, the brainchild of Rowland Hussey Macy. It initially operated as a dry goods store that served workers who were employed by the local Massachusetts mill. Rowland decided to try his luck in the Big Apple and moved to New York City, establishing a store under the name of R. H. Macy & Company. One interesting fact about the Macy’s logo is that a star has always been present in the logo design in some way, shape or form. This was because Mr. Macy had been employed on a whaling ship in Nantucket in his teenage years and had a tattoo of a star! Isn’t that interesting!?
Macy’s was one of the original department stores in New York City. You can find nearly everything you would need within its enormous boundaries. From house wares, to three piece suits; Macy’s has got it all. It markets to both male and female clientele and its prices are quite reasonable. Macy’s has come to be known as one of the most respected brands across the USA and has further cemented its position as one of the best department stores in the city by providing exceptional customer service, and moderately priced goods. Macy’s even sponsors one of the largest and most extravagant parades in the city, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in which humongous floats of well known cartoon icons and other fun characters, as well as various entertainers march through the streets of New York. It has been an event that completes any Thanksgiving holiday and is a wonderful sight to see for the whole family.
Macy’s has several locations throughout the city. One location can be found at 151 West 34th Street, New York, NY in Herald Square. This is by far its biggest location in the city, and should be added to any travelers list of must-see destinations. You can really get a glimpse of the American consumer culture as well as find many reasonably priced goods to buy for your enjoyment. The best time of year to check Macy’s out is during the holidays when they run many promotional specials and of course, the place is lavishly decorated from tip to toe.
