Millions of people pass through the historic Grand Central Terminal every day. With its 44 train platforms, the midtown landmark, located on 42nd Street and Park Avenue, isn’t just one of the busiest train stations in the city, but the world over.
Yet, considering that most of the people who visit Grand Central are just passing through, many do not have the time to take in the mystery, lore, restaurants and beautiful Beaux-Arts architecture that makes the station so grand. Well, now there’s an opportunity to change that.
Run by Municipal Arts Society, the 90-minute Grand Central walking tour takes place on Friday’s only at 12:30pm. An expert tour guide will greet NYC residents, commuters, tourists anyone else interested in Grand Central and the surrounding neighborhood at the Sculpture Court of the Whitney Museum at Altria on East 42nd Street, across from Grand Central. Although the tour is officially free, there is a suggested donation of $10 per person for this tour.
Grand Central Terminal, which has undergone many renovations over the years, remains a treasure with a facade decorated with famous NYC art statues and brilliant bronze and gold accents. Indeed, the Grand Central ceiling features a huge astronomical mural, a fact that has been largely missed by visitors over the years. With the walking tour folks can also enjoy a walk around Grand Central as well as the extensive number of shops restaurants available at this famous New York City landmark.
