New York City is a major tourist destination that is renowned worldwide for its culture, scenery, and rich history. Visitors come from far and wide to see all of its prestigious landmarks and gain a glimpse of how it all started. There are many different sections of the city that you must see along the course of your journey in order to get the full New York experience.

Some are pricier than others and among the most elite is a special street that has been chalked in history books as one of the most expensive commercial districts in the entire world. Fifth Avenue is an attraction for both tourists and the elite of society. A plethora of shops exists between 49th and 57th streets that are ranked by Forbes Magazine as being some of the priciest retail districts worldwide. From designer clothes to intricately designed custom jewelry you are sure to find something that meets your fancy in one of the many shops on Fifth Avenue.

Don’t plan on buying anything on Fifth Avenue if you are on a budget as the average cost of items starts at $80 and can reach well upwards of $100,000! Renowned retailers such as FAO Schwartz Toy Company sell their wares in elegantly designed shops that draw the attention of crowds passing by. Whether you are just window shopping or you intend on buying unique items, this is a wonderful place to visit and spend a day. So what other stores can you find on Fifth Avenue? Tiffany & Co is one of the most famous, specializing in jewelry and custom designed handbags as well as other accessories. Prada is another notable name brand, and located close by you can find other designer retail establishments like Louis Vuitton, and Mikimoto & Piaget. Though most of the stores cater to women, men are able to find quite a few stores that stock many high-quality men’s items. The NBA store, Hugo Boss and Harry Winston are three that come to mind, along with the coveted Apple store.  Traveling with kids? Make sure you take them to the World of Disney Store; an excellent stop, especially for people who have never been to Walt Disney World!

Fifth Avenue is a must-see stop that should be added to any tourist agenda. If not for the purpose of purchasing unique items, one should at least visit this area to see the wonders of American consumer culture. It is the perfect snapshot of the most elite and high fashion section of society and is a wonderful way to spend a day. Fifth Avenue does not only offer shopping, as you trek further down Fifth Avenue it spreads into a beautiful and ornate residential district, as well as a portion of the city referred to as “Museum Mile”. No matter the time of year Fifth Avenue is bound to be busy, so don’t expect to see all the sites in the span of an hour or two; Shopping on Fifth Avenue is most definitely a day trip.
